Let me put one thing straight: I don´t write funny music. My music can be beautiful, sometimes tragical, often dramatical and there can also be a layer of irony. That´s a least what I expect people to hear.
BUT: I have never had any aim to amuse or to write something that sounds funny. There is no point what so ever in trying to say something funny with music.
Why do I bother to state this? Well because I hate that kind of music and attitude. This feeling emerged when I was young and started my composition studies. I felt that compoers who were afraid of being seroius lacked confidence in the art itself. In stead of trying to dig into the soul of the music it was more important to make crazy sounds and unexpected developments. People that are uneasy with classical music may find that approach convenient and a way to go since they are afraid of strong feelings and a convincing attitude. But then they don´t know anything about Beethoven or Stockhausen, or if they know they can´t tell the difference which is even worse.
Let the comedians handle the funny business so that I can work with serious stuff...
