Taking risks

4/18/2008

I was about nine years old when I first made a statement about music. I had a teacher in "Syslöjd", (a subject where the kids lerned to sew)  a very nice lady who was very interested in music, she was the mother of the swedish singer-songwriter Nicolai Dunger. One day she asked us kids if we ever listened to classical music? I assume that we did not know what that was so I guess she mentioned some composers like Mozart and Beethoven. My father had some records with Karajan conducting Beethoven, and I had listened to them quite much actually so I recognized the name and answered that I had listened to that.

I should not have done that. At least I thought that at the time when it happened. My comrades started laughing. I think that is very interesting. If you have never heard this kind of music. How can you know that it is silly? It must mean that you have had parents or relatives that have been speaking very condescending about the term classical music. Which means that you have not been given the freedom of making your own choice which I think is sad.

After that I was called "Mozze" every time we had this subject by some fellow pupils from another school. Well I did´nt bother anyway: I was already at that time totally uninterested in what other people thought about me and I was never afraid of unknown things.

I´m happy for that.
